What goes into a built-in office

Start with the work: two monitors or one, video calls or heads-down, shared space or your own room. That drives desk depth (24–30 inches for real monitor distance), knee clearance, and drawer layout. Then power and wires — grommets, a wire chase behind the desk, outlets inside cabinets for chargers and the router, so the finished piece stays clean after move-in, not just on install day. Upper shelving is built like my library work: sized to load, scribed to the wall, trimmed into the room. Closed storage below keeps the working mess invisible on camera. The same discipline applies to non-office storage walls — linen built-ins, closet fit-outs, media storage — it's the same craft pointed at a different problem.

How much does a built-in home office cost in Central New York?

Every office and storage-wall project is quoted individually, driven by desk length, cabinet count, and shelving footage. The full logic — what moves a quote up, what doesn't — is in my cost guide, and every quote I send shows the same itemized breakdown, with a written fixed price before any deposit.

Is a built-in office worth it versus buying furniture?

If you might rearrange the room next year, buy furniture. A built-in is for the room whose job is settled — it uses the full wall, fits the odd corner furniture can't, and it stays with the house as a feature rather than leaving in a moving truck. I've written the honest version of that trade-off in custom vs. stock.

How the build works

Design and measurement happen in your home; the build happens in my shop; installation takes a day or two. The full sequence is on the process page. From approved design, plan on 8–16 weeks — I run a one-craftsman shop and I'd rather quote you a real calendar than a hopeful one.

Same craft, harder weather: see mudroom storage, or check the service area.

Office questions,
answered straight.

Can you handle outlets and wiring?

I design for it — grommets, chases, and cabinet cutouts are built in, and outlet placement is planned at design. New electrical work itself is done by a licensed electrician; I coordinate the cabinetry around it.

Can you build a two-person office?

Yes — shared desk runs and back-to-back layouts are a design question, mostly about wall length and who needs what within reach. Bring the wall dimensions to the inquiry and I'll tell you what fits.

What desk surface do you use?

Hardwood or hardwood-veneer tops with durable sprayed finishes are my default. The exact species and finish get specced with you at design and itemized on the quote.

Do you do closets and other storage walls too?

Yes — linen built-ins, closet fit-outs, and media walls are the same construction standard as my office work. If it's a storage problem on a wall, it's probably in scope.
